Virtual machines

VM backups and restore

Restore a full VM from a selected PBS backup on the VM page.

Run a backup of a VM now or restore a full VM from a selected PBS backup.

Run a backup now

Open VM → Backups, click Backup now and confirm. Up to 2 backups can be started per VM in 24 hours, and not while another backup of this VM is running. The backup runs as your user and appears in Datacenter → Tasks. Old backups are removed only by the retention of a backup job that includes this VM; without a job, backups are kept and billed until the VM is deleted.

Before you begin

  • VM must be stopped before restore.
  • A backup copy exists on VM → Backups.

Steps

  1. Stop the VM.
  2. Open VM → Backups.
  3. Select a backup and click Restore.
  4. Choose the start-after-restore option if available and needed.
  5. After completion, verify the VM and applications.

Watch out

  • Restore requires a stopped VM.
  • HA VMs: turn off autostart for restore — restore will not start with autostart enabled. Start the VM manually after completion.
  • To download individual files from a backup, use Backup → Datastore.
  • Backups cannot be deleted manually: they are removed by the retention of the backup job or together with the VM.
