MCP server

Manage hostd Public Cloud from an AI agent (Cursor, Claude Code) over the Model Context Protocol.

The hostd MCP server lets an AI agent work with your Public Cloud on your behalf: list projects and OS images, add SSH keys, create and manage VMs, and set PTR records. It uses the same API and the same API key.

Endpoint: https://mcp.hostd.cloud/mcp (Streamable HTTP).

Connect

Create an API key in the portal under Settings → API Keys. A separate key for the agent is a good default: you can delete it at any time without affecting your other integrations.

Access

The agent works with your API key, so it has the same access as the key: your role in each project, limited by the project's API access set by its owner (details). Projects with no API access are hidden from the agent; in read-only projects it can only read.

Example

Create a VM in project x, install Docker on it, hostname test.x.com.

The agent:

Finds the project and a suitable OS image.
Reads your public SSH key from your computer and adds it to hostd if it is missing.
Shows you a draft (size, network, hourly price) and creates the VM only after you approve it.
Waits until the VM is running and gets its public IP.
Connects over SSH from your computer and installs the software.

SSH runs in the agent's own terminal with your key — hostd never receives your private key. The agent needs terminal access for this step.

If you do not give a password, a random one is generated and saved in the VM notes in the portal. It is not shown in the chat.

Limits

The MCP server follows the API limits. It also paces the agent: repeated calls wait briefly instead of failing, and the agent gets the retry time when a limit is reached.
